What is Peer-to-peer?

Peer-to-peer (P2P) refers to a decentralized network where participants (peers) interact directly with each other without the need for a central authority. In cryptocurrency networks, P2P systems enable users to transact directly, ensuring greater privacy and reducing the need for intermediaries.

In the context of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology, P2P networks are fundamental. Every node in a blockchain acts as both a client and a server, capable of broadcasting, verifying, and storing transactions. This structure ensures that all data is redundantly distributed and synchronized across the network, enhancing transparency, fault tolerance, and resistance to censorship or shutdown.

By removing intermediaries such as banks, payment processors, or custodial services, P2P systems allow users to retain full control over their assets and transactions. This not only enhances privacy but also reduces costs and settlement times, as users are not dependent on third parties to approve, validate, or route transactions.

Beyond payments, the peer-to-peer model supports a wide range of decentralized applications, including crypto exchanges (known as P2P trading platforms), file sharing protocols (like IPFS), and decentralized lending services. In these applications, P2P design ensures that users interact directly with one another, negotiating terms, verifying identities, and exchanging assets without intermediary control.
