Tokenization

What is Tokenization?

Tokenization is the process of transforming ownership rights or claims to a real-world or digital asset into a digital token that exists and operates on a blockchain. These tokens represent a unit of value or ownership and can correspond to a wide range of assets such as real estate, stocks, bonds, artwork, commodities, intellectual property, or even voting rights. By creating a token that encapsulates asset rights, tokenization enables the fractionalization, secure transfer, and programmable control of the underlying asset.

This process brings numerous benefits including increased liquidity, faster settlement times, reduced operational costs, and greater accessibility. For instance, tokenizing real estate allows for fractional ownership, enabling investors to purchase small portions of a property that would otherwise require significant capital. In finance, tokenized securities can be traded around the clock without relying on traditional intermediaries or custodians.

Because the tokens exist on a blockchain, they benefit from its inherent transparency, immutability, and security. Smart contracts can enforce rules and conditions automatically, such as distribution of dividends or rights transfers, enhancing efficiency and trust.

Tokenization is a foundational technology behind emerging use cases in decentralized finance (DeFi), digital identity, and asset-backed stablecoins, offering a bridge between traditional financial systems and blockchain innovation.
